The United States is looking into Carrier IQ, to see if it illegally tracked individual’s data, without the proper approval from mobile users.

Carrier IQ is an application installed onto Android, BlackBerry and other mobile devices that secretly records all keystrokes made and performed on the device. This includes telephone numbers, email accounts, passwords, and everything else done on the phone. Once the information is recorded it is then sent back to Carrier IQ. This application, until recently, was unknown to most individuals using the devices (over 150 million cell phone users).

Carrier IQ is complying with the investigation, although the company does not have much of an option. They have received incredibly bad press such the story broke that millions of individuals were losing important information to the company. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile have all confirmed that they used information obtained with the app, but also stated that the content was not recorded, and there are no records of the key logging data, as everything is disposed of.

Carrier IQ states that although some user data was obtained using the application, nothing was an infringement on privacy, nor did it violate the rights of the person who owned and used the phone. The company states the application is just installed on the phone in order to help cell phone networks receive a more detailed analysis of everything that is going wrong on the device, which in turn helps the mobile company correct the problems.

Many individuals are scarred that the FBI is going to obtained Carrier IQ, so that they can used the stored information created on the mobile devices. This way, the government is able to track just about everything that is created and sent out on the device. Carrier IQ has stated it is not aware of any requests from the FBI in order to gain access to the information stored via Carrier IQ.

Up until a few weeks ago, nobody knew about the Carrier IQ and what exactly the software did. This was until Trevor Eckhart discovered the application and created a video of the app and released it online. In the video, you are able to clearly see the individual performing tasks on the mobile phone, all while the device is recording every single keystroke.
